Chesterton Society Meeting
January 9 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The readings for this month are as follows:
The Everlasting Man – Prefatory Note. Just a paragraph before the table of contents, but in it he acknowledges the fact that he is writing from a Catholic perspective. He mentions H. G. Wells because he is writing The Everlasting Man in response to Wells’ book The Outline of History that was published a few years prior.
Introduction: The Plan of This Book. This is a fairly lengthy introduction, but it explains GKC’s method of writing. It explains a theme that is prominent throughout Chesterton’s writings, that of looking at familiar things as if for the first time, to truly “see” something after being just familiar with it. After seeing things for 999 times, to look at it the 1000th time and see it as if for the first time.
Chapter I – The Man in the Cave.
