Sacramento Chesterton Society in Classroom 2 (Click for details.)
February 14, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Readings:
Chapters 5 and 6 of Chesterton’s Autobiography
Chapter 5 – Nationalism and Notting Hill
Chapter 6 – The Fantastic Suburb
At our meeting last Tuesday the discussion was pretty lively and, Mirabile Dictu, it mostly stayed on the topics of the readings! There were a lot of echoes from chapters in Chesterton’s Orthodoxy, especially his chapters The Maniac and The Ethics of Elfland, as well as some other chapters and other writings.
As mentioned in the last meeting, Chesterton’s Autobiography probably isn’t the best book to read if you are just starting to read Chesterton as it has lots of passages about people he met who are relatively unknown today and he describes events that at the time were important, but today have largely been lost to history. But there are plenty of other passages that give us his reflections on topics philosophical and religious that are very good examples of his mature thought – and well worth reading. He also talks about the circumstances behind the writing of his major books. If you find yourself in a passage that is pointless to you, just skim over it or skip it; you’ll soon find something more to your liking. The obscure passages will probably be explained at the meetings.
Remember The Club of Queer Trades, too! This month is Chapter 5 – The Noticeable Conduct of Professor Chadd.
And for those who enjoyed the P. G. Wodehouse story last month, here’s another:
